LLNL Abilities Champions Employee Resource Group promotes the inclusion of interns and employees with physical, psychological, developmental and neurocognitive differences as valuable contributors to the Laboratory’s mission by:
- Enhancing the overall diversity of Laboratory employees through strengthening LLNL’s commitment to hiring and retaining individuals with physical, psychological, developmental, and neurocognitive differences.
- Redefining what constitutes “genius” at LLNL by expanding the ways we think about which individuals can carry out what roles and broaden our current ways of thinking and problem solving.
- Broadening the pool of employees who carry out our mission, enhancing our talented, committed workforce, and meeting important national goals for engaging Americans with impairments by:
- Improving abilities awareness and management best practices through supervisor training and educational resources for all employees.
- Increasing the pipeline of STEM workforce through dedicated summer student programs, such as the existing Partnership with Orion Academy for high school students with neurocognitive disorders.
- Expanding internship opportunities for veterans with emphasis on veterans with physical, psychological, and neurocognitive differences.
- Developing cooperative college internship partnerships with local universities and colleges such as Cal State East Bay, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, Stanford University and local Community Colleges.
- Helping the Laboratory achieve compliance with Federal regulations related to the Rehabilitation Act, targeting 7% utilization for qualified individuals with disabilities employed by Federal contractors and subcontractors, deliberately enhancing the intern pipeline.
- Improving the accuracy of physical, psychological, developmental, and neurocognitive differences reporting through staff awareness.
- Including individuals with physical, psychological, developmental, and neurocognitive differences in allocating the summer student transition fund.
- Encouraging significant Laboratory recognition through the Engagement and Inclusion Awards Program for supervisors, mentors and hiring managers who hire and support individuals with physical, psychological, developmental, and neurocognitive differences.
- Performing an Ombuds role, working with SHRM to identify job opportunities across the Laboratory, working with Akima, identifying community resources with connections and support services, serving as a resource for hiring managers, and engaging other Engagement and Inclusion Employee Resource Groups where interests converge.
- Coordinating/cooperating with other national laboratories and DOE/NNSA to develop and share resources and implement joint programs where feasible.
- Contributing to the Bay Area community as a model employer of individuals with physical, psychological, developmental and neurocognitive differences.
